I was so broke I lived in a shelter in New York – Tiwa Savage

Singer Tiwa Savage has reflected on the time she was so broke and had to live in a shelter in Bedford–Stuyvesant, New York. The ace singer made this statement at a surprise party organised by her friends for her album launch, Celia.

Based on a video posted on singer, Lami Phillips Instagram account, the sonorous singer, Tiwa Savage described Bedford–Stuyvesant popularly referred to as Bed-Stuy, as a project in New York known to shelter the poor mostly with drug addiction problems.

The singer said she had just graduated from school at the time but couldn’t work due to her citizenship status.

“I think I was 22 and we were in New York. I was living in Bed-Stuy, kind of like a shelter. A lot of people didn’t know this.

“I was in a shelter for women that had drug abuse problems.

“I just graduated from school. You know as an international student you can’t work. So, I couldn’t work. I was doing the side thing in Bed-Stuy which is like the hood in Brooklyn,” Tiwa Savage said.

The singer went on to reveal how she met with Elizabeth Elohor, a former beauty queen, who took her out to eat in New York when she was hungry.

She noted that since she was broke at the time she had to order only appetizers.

“She was ordering food and I ordered appetizers because I was so broke and I was so hungry.

“And I remember she was looking at me and asked, ‘what are you ordering?.’ And I was just lying that I’m not hungry.

And then she just started asking me, ‘are you sure?.’ And then I just started crying. And then she’s just like, ‘what is the matter?.’ I said, ‘Elohor, I don’t have money.’

She just started ordering stuff and she even ordered stuff for me to take home.

“I remember going home to my little box or whatever, and I was just crying. This girl literally made my day.

“So, the first time they put my picture in Times Square, she was the first person I called,” she said emotionally.

She went on to advice everyone in the gathering not to allow time to rob them of their destiny.

COVID-19: Buhari to brief ECOWAS in Niamey

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will on Monday lead a Federal Government delegation to the 57th Ordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States Authority of Heads of State and Government which will hold in Niamey, Niger Republic.

As the ECOWAS Champion on the Fight against COVID-19, Buhari is expected to present a report on the pandemic in the region to the summit.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday titled “President Buhari attends ECOWAS summit in Niger Republic; COVID-19, economy, security and democracy top agenda.”

The statement read, “President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja Monday for Niamey, Niger Republic to participate in the 57th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

“The one-day summit will deliberate on the Special Report on COVID-19 to be presented by President Buhari who was appointed the ECOWAS Champion on the Fight against COVID-19 during the Extraordinary Virtual Summit of ECOWAS on April 23, 2020.

As a champion, the Nigerian leader was expected to coordinate the sub-regional response against the pandemic. In furtherance of that objective, under the supervision of the Champion, Nigerian Ministers of Health, Aviation, and Finance were appointed Chairpersons of the Ministerial Coordination Committees on Health; Transport, Logistics, and Trade; and Finance respectively.”

Shehu said the summit would also receive a special report on the ECOWAS single currency programme to be presented by President Julius Bio of Sierra Leone and Chair of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the West African Monetary Zone, and President Alassane Ouattara, who is Chair of the West African Economic Monetary Union.

The presidential aide added that the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean Brou, will present to the West African leaders, the 2020 interim report on activities of the sub-regional body including ECOWAS Vision 2050.

“The alarming rise in incidents of terrorism, insurgency, armed banditry, and piracy will also come under focus, while the disruption of the democratic process by the military in Mali, will receive further attention

Similarly, in Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea and Niger where parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled for this year, the imperative to strengthen democracy in the sub-region by respecting constitutional provisions, rule of law and outcomes of free and fair polls, will be emphasised.

“President Buhari, who will be accompanied to the Summit by ministers and other top government officials, will return to Abuja after the meeting,” the statement added

Life is hard, ex-BBN star Anto opens up

Former Big Brother Naija Season Three reality star, Munirat Antoinette Lecky, popularly called Anto, has openly admitted via her social media account, Instagram, that “life is hard”.

Speaking to her 916k followers on her official Instagram handle, @antolecky, the entrepreneur and influencer revealed that as a celebrity, there is pressure to keep up with the status quo.

“I hate to show any kind of weakness but too many things have been happening as of late, where I have to be honest with myself and accept that life is hard and I don’t have all the answers like I think I do.

Especially as a public figure, ‘yeyebrity’, influencer, or what have you, we are expected to have it all together. Not sure why because we are humans like the next person. There is pressure to keep up. We are in a place where our value is based on numbers and not our God-given talent.”No lie, sh*t is f**ked up. I just write this to anyone, be it celebrity by social media or celebrity by heart because we all deserve to be celebrated, YOU ARE ENOUGH. YOU ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH,” she said

Anto was a housemate at the BBNaija Season 3 ‘Double Wahala’ reality show and was evicted from the Big Brother house in the 8th week of the competition.

She was 28 years of age when she participated in the BBNaija competition in 2018.

Only Buhari can look Obasanjo in the eye and survive it – Adesina

Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), says only his principal has enough confidence to confront former President Olusegun Obasanjo and tell him his honest opinion on things “and survive it”.

Obasanjo and Buhari have a few things in common. Obasanjo was Nigeria’s military head of state between February 13, 1976, and September 30, 1979. He later became a civilian President from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007. Buhari also ruled as military head of state from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985, before returning as a democratically elected leader on May 29, 2015.

Adesina, in a piece titled, ‘Buhari Applause For Akinwumi Adesina’, compared Obasanjo to “America and some other world powers”, adding that “you have every right to shiver in the broiling sun” when they come after you.

But the President’s spokesperson, in the piece published on his website on Friday, said, “President Buhari stood against the wishes of America on AfDB Presidency” and supported the re-election bid of African Development Bank President, Akinwumi Adesina.

Mp3banger had earlier reported that the African banking institution and its President were in the eye of the storm earlier this year over allegations of impropriety levelled against Akinwumi Adesina by some whistleblowers working in the bank.

However, the 60-year-old former Nigerian minister of Agriculture, who became the first Nigerian to helm the AfDB in 2015, had insisted he was “innocent” of the charges.

The bank’s Ethics’ Committee, which first investigated the allegations, gave him a clean bill that was accepted by the Board of Governors but the United States outrightly rejected the report and demanded a fresh probe by an independent body.

The independent panel headed by former Irish President, Mary Robinson, also cleared all allegations levelled against the AfDB President.

Akinwumi Adesina was then sworn in on September 01, 2020, for another five-year term after getting a 100 percent vote of all regional and non-regional members of the Bank.

The independent panel headed by former Irish President, Mary Robinson, also cleared all allegations levelled against the AfDB President.

Commenting on the development, Buhari’s spokesperson wrote, “The strife is o’er, the battle done. But it was by no means easy. It took so much: tact, diplomacy, guts, deft footworks, prayers, yes, prayers, and so many other things.

“But today, we can noise it all around. Dr Akinwumi Adesina is now elected for another five-year term as President of the African Development Bank.

“If America and some other world powers come after you, you have every right to shiver in the broiling sun. It’s like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo telling you to dismount from the horse of leadership in Nigeria. Only a Muhammadu Buhari can look him straight in the eyes, and say; No sir. And survive it.”

Quoting Buhari’s reaction to Akinwumi Adesina’s victory, the President’s spokesperson said, “He (Adesina) deserves it (re-election as AfDB president).”

He, however, noted that Buhari would not have supported the AfDB President if “Adesina had peradventure been tainted with the slightest whiff of corruption or any other unethical act.”

Osun COVID-19 Committee: Making Impact in Troubled Times

The novel coronavirus which seems to be unwilling to get eradicated anytime soon in Nigeria and the world over has caused untold setbacks to economic activities across the globe and has, of course,  resulted in the deaths of many.

Being badly hit, many states in the country are being tasked to creatively respond to the debilitating impact on their economies, especially considering the dwindling allocation from Abuja. Osun, under the leadership of the finance guru, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, appears to be leading the pack in this regard.

In her bid to stem the ugly tide of the pandemic, the State of Osun decided to get innovative and set up a committee of its notable elites to cater to the needs of her vulnerable citizens.
The tremendous achievements of this team have been a source of joy to the people.

The committee, headed by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A Adeboye,  is made up of eminent Osun sons and daughters of the State. Other members are Asiwaju Tunde Badmus, Chief Adebayo Jimoh, Pastor Matthew Asimolowo, Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, General Alani Akinrinade (Rtd), Chief Tunde Ponle, Rt Hon Patricia Etteh, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, Sir Demola Aladekomo, Rt Hon Lasun Yusuff, Dr. Wale Babalakin, and Dr. Segun Aina.

Others are Mallam Yussuf Alli, SAN, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, Mr. AbdulKabir Aliyu, Dr. Deji Adeleke, Otunba Iyiola Omisore, and three former governors of the state, Chief Bisi Akande, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

The Committee is also supported by a 5-man Interface Committee put up by Governor Oyetola. Led by Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Charles ‘Diji Akinola, the interface team provides requisite bureaucratic and executive support to eminent person group. Other leading cabinet members such as Prince Abdullahi Binuyo, Deputy Chief of Staff; Professor Olalekan Yinusa, Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget; Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, Commissioner for Finance and Mr. Adeleke Adebayo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The COVID 19 Food and Relief committee was essentially set up by the Governor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola to help home-ridden vulnerable citizens get food and other relief packages in these trying times. In its first outing, the committee certainly did not disappoint as it successfully reached over 22,000 households across the State using a bespoke scientific approach that was hitch-free. The exercise was widely commended for its transparency and thoroughness.

Dr. Jimoh, secretary of the committee gave insights into the formidable work being done. According to him, “the output you have seen is the result of planning and painstaking articulation of our goals and objectives. If you look at the members of the committee, they are very experienced people in varying areas such as business, intellectual capabilities, and professions. We are also working with a committee set-up by the government called the Interface Committee.  We also looked at what our people would want and who are we targeting.

“We had to look at data and got working with the Interface committee of government, using a social-register that has been attested and proven to be at least reliable, auditable and traceable, for us to identify people who are truly vulnerable and require succour. We also had to find out what the people need through a survey. You know, essentially, we have only been talking about rice, but it will interest you to know that when a subcommittee of our committee headed by Prince Tunde Ponle did a survey, he came out to say the people are expecting garri, Ewa, elubo, noodles, among others. You see, we are professionals that research before we set out to do things so that you give to a person what will satisfy the person and he will say thank you for.

“We then ask ourselves how we would mobilise these things and our committee agreed that everything we need should be sourced from Osun so that we can spend the money that we get within our people. This is so that the resources we get revolve and improves the gross domestic product of the State. All these required planning and articulation. But the good news is, when we started the distribution, it was beyond the expectation of the people and they are very happy for it”.

Jimoh also hinted that so far the Committee raised over N300 million in forms of donations while also still receiving tones of food donations, in addition to crowd-funding platforms through which it rakes in funds from Osun citizens in the diaspora.

“The goodwill of the governor and the State that is making people support us. Besides, we also have lots of companies that are donating tons of food materials. One good thing is that through technology because the world itself is knowledge-driven, we have set up crowd-funding platforms meant for and targeted at every citizen of the State living in Nigerian and even in the diaspora. Through that, people are donating from the diaspora. It is a marathon; we will continue to spend as long as we get money”.

The Osun Food and Relief committee also strives to foster compliance with the World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols among Osun residents to deter from activities that will make the pandemic more pronounced in the State and as such flatten the curve.

Commendably, the COVID-19 is already working in partnership with the state-owned university, Osun State University, to establish a world-class molecular laboratory to diagnose COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. This, as we also learned, is in addition to a herbal medical research center that is in the pipeline to support the globalization of indigenous drugs.
