Born Damini Ogulu but everybody calls him Burna Boy, loved by fans and admired by many. Burna Boy is a talented Raggae Dancehall artiste that has never stopped dropping hits, but with all this, awards always eludes him.

2014 can be described as one of his worst records, despite dropping a popular album with hit track Yawa, Burna Boy didn’t win any award in Nigeria. He lost the album of the year to Sean Tizzle at the headies, and last year MAMA saw him lose another award everyone thought he was going to win, Best New Artiste, he eventually lost it to Stanley Enow of Cameroon. Another Nomination at Nigerian Entertainment Award didn’t help as he also lost in the category of Album of the year.

2015, and it seems like the whole scenario is about to get worse despite the fact that his hit tracks, Don Gongon, GBA GBE (With Dj Spinall) topped all major charts.
He was not nominated for any award category in MAMA 2015 and he only got mentioned at all due to a collabo he had with South African rapper, AKA.

So why did Burna Boy who used to be a regular artiste on nomination list, miss out on MTV Africa Music Award list.

There are actually 3 factors that might have led to this..

1)Competition: Nigerians covered the MAMA award nominees list, and this just shows the kind of competition in the country. Wizkid, P-Square, Davido, Olamide, Yemi Alade, Patoranking, Seyi Shay, Mavin, Flavour, Lil Kesh got nominated for MAMA award, and they all have one thing in common, they all ruled 2014. Analyzing each of them will take all the space, but the honest truth is the Lil Kesh “Shoki remix” was one of the biggest thing in Nigeria last year, so also was Mavin’s Dorobucci, Yemi Alade’s Johnny and Seyi Shay’s “Crazy” video with Wizkid was one of the best in Nigeria last year. So where does Burna Boy fall in all this list of Nigerians. Not far, his hit with DJ Spinall was popular but not like Shoki, Dorobucci and Johnny. This is just the stiff competition in Nigeria, when you take this list to Africa, you can see why they can easily screen him out.

2) International Recognition: MAMA awards covers Africa as a whole, and that means you have to be loved(not just known) by fans in different part of the continent. What has Burna Boy done about that, Nothing!!. Between last year and this year, the likes of Wizkid, Davido, Yemi Alade have been on not just African tour, but on World tour. During Yemi Alade tour she was almost lynched in Germany for arriving late and she was featured on a French TV station, thats international recognition. Seyi Shay and Patoranking are always in some place in Africa performing at top shows, and its not like Burna Boy doesn’t get to perform outside Nigeria, he gets shows outside the country but most times are low key and are not even well publicized.

3) Leonardo DiCaprio Curse:

Lol, Leonardo DiCaprio is Hollywood finest and has acted in more top grossing movie than anyone alive(Fact). Leonardo DiCaprio however has always been pushed out of awards, even the popular Titanic where he played Jack and got nominates for various awards. He didn’t win anything, meanwhile the girl that played ROSE, packed home awards. Does that mean that Leonardo DiCaprio is not a good actor, No.. Same applies to Burna Boy, he is talented and has never stopped dropping hits, but recently has been shunned from awards due to various ‘circumstances’, he has been unlucky and always find himself with very good opposition. But that shouldn’t let him down, rather it should spur him on and make him work harder. And probably like Leo, pleasing your fans should be the real award you strive for.
